Ceramic tile floors are a popular flooring option. They are durable but need care and cleaning. Knowing how to clean your ceramic tile floors properly will keep them looking great and help them to last for years. Here are some tips on how to keep your tile floors looking brand new.
Step 1
Sweep or vacuum the floor daily. This will remove crumbs, loose dirt and any other debris. Sand and grit can dull the surface.
Step 2
Mix a mild all purpose cleaner with hot water and apply with a nylon bristled scrub brush. I always use a long handled scrub brush as it makes the scrubbing of the tile much easier. Concentrate your scrubbing on the grout lines as grout is porous and easily absorbs dirt. For stubborn grout stains, mix a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the stain and let it sit for a while. Then remove with a nylon brush.
Step 3
Follow the scrubbing with a clean water rinse. I use a mop bucket with a wringer and a string mop. A string mop seems to pick up the dirt better than a sponge mop. If you are doing a large area change your water as needed.
Final Thoughts
We do not recommend using vinegar to clean your tile. Vinegar is acidic and can discolor the grout over time. Never use vinegar on a natural stone tile such as marble, limestone or slate as vinegar can etch these products.
Allow the tile and grout ample time to dry before walking on your clean floor.
